Attend the Vegas Bellydance Intensive--FREE

Hello everyone. (from Director of Volunteers, Reema)

I have been asked to be the Director of Volunteers for the LV Intensive 2009. I am looking for enthusiastic, fun loving people who want to take part in one of the biggest and best events Las Vegas has to offer. So many performers come to Las Vegas and witness first-hand the comradery and family like atmosphere at this event and a great part is owed to all the wonderful and generous volunteers we count on each year.

Additionally, volunteers get the added perks of taking some classes or attending the shows for free, and have fun. There are many opportunities to be involved in. We need people to be ushers,to help at the registration tables, and to check people into classes. We also need help running the festival stage, runners for vendors & performers, personal assistants to the teachers, etc. We'd enjoy having some "belly husbands" who want to help move, set up, and tear down equipment as well as dealing with technical aspects of the event. Please join our Bellydance Intensive family. If you are interested, please e-mail me direct at reema@bellydanceintensive.com.

Sincerely and Yours in Dance,

Reema, Director of Volunteers

I have been an avid collector of comics for over 35 years and have acquired quitre a few comics of value. I have mainly collected X-Men, Avengers, Wolverine and anything having to do with the X-Men series, such as X-Factor, etc. I have also collected a few DC comics, mostly those associated with the Death of Superman. If you are interested in purchasing any of my comics please send me an email and we can meet to discuss it. I am looking for decent prices for the comics and willing to negotiate. I also have a collection of Heavy Metal.

Burning Man ticket Raffle is on!

Burning Man ticket Raffle is on!

That's right for just $5 YOU can get a chance at one ticket to Burning Man! Tickets to Burning Man 2008 are currently $295 on the web and there will be NO GATE SALES this year either. Yikes! So, here's your chance to get ONE TICKET for the ridiculously low price of just $5. How can we do this? We must be CRAZY to make this kind of offer! Dark Skies was gifted an extra ticket and we want to help a deserving burner and we're doing a fund raiser as well, so to tie it all in we're raffling this ticket off for $5 per entry. The drawing will be held on August 11th when we will announce the winner who will be selected by Peaches the Jack Russell Terrier rummaging in the ticket bowl.
Purely non-scientific but a lot of fun nonetheless!

TO ENTER: send $5 PER ENTRY via PayPal to darkskies@vegasartists.com
You may purchase as many entries as you wish, they are $5 each.
Each $5 entry buys you ONE CHANCE at winning this free ticket!
Good luck and have a great burn in 2008!

**Calling all single moms**

Hey ladies...my friend, Honoree Corporon, is a life success coach.
She works with top CEO executives all over the place and is a vastly
successful single mom herself. She is an inspiration to me
personally.

Anyway, she is offering a free course to single moms who need more
education and support. This is for a case-study she is doing.
Eventually she will charge money for this class.

I am passing along the details below. Please drop me an email at
samira (at) bellydanceintensive (dot) com if you decide to apply.
She has asked me to forward the names of those I send her direction.

Much love...(your fellow single mom),
Alisa/Samira
www.bellydanceintensive.com

--------------------------------------------

Success & the Single Mom

Your 100-Day Action Coaching Program for Creating the Life You Want –
Now!

Whether you are a single mom by chance or by choice, have you
wondered what would have to happen in order for you to "get your
groove back" … to feel healthy, centered and even optimistic again?
During and after my divorce, I asked myself the questions: How do I
raise a healthy, happy, well-adjusted child? How do I run a business,
eliminate financial stress and feel like I am fulfilling my purpose
for being on this planet? How do I heal myself and open myself up to
a new love?

You have perhaps been struggling with the basic challenges every
single mom faces – feeling helpless, overwhelmed or even depressed,
having a lack of support, getting it all done and getting some sleep,
balancing your personal and professional life -- and there are, of
course, many others.

If the questions and challenges above resonate with you, perhaps this
Program is just what you need to uncover your true self and unleash
what's truly possible for you, your children and your future.

For a select group, I've created the 100-Day Action GROUP Coaching
Program for Single Moms to help you get – and stay – on your path to
future success. This Program is for a specific woman: one who is a
single mom, who wants to regain her sense of self, sanity and a
higher self-esteem, who wants to jump-start her momentum and create
success, balance and fulfillment in every area of her life … and she
wants it the sooner the better. If this is you or someone you know,
keep reading (and pass it on)!

I know this Program works because it is one that I used personally
during my separation and divorce six years ago. My life now is truly
wonderful and was created – mentally first – several years ago as I
discovered the tools, strategies and processes I am now sharing
through this Program.

The Program will help you to:

1. Identify your Point A – where you are now, and your Point B –
where you want to go and the results you want to create. With this
clarity, you will move more effortlessly forward toward your dreams
and goals.

2. Raise your self-esteem.

3. Help you to create the support system you need.

4. Get you out of your own way.

5. Help you identify ways to work smarter, not harder.

6. Create unstoppable momentum, more life balance, more business and
more money than ever before (and you ever thought possible!), and
more time with your children.

7. Get and stay on track.

8. Maintain integrity, balance and fulfillment.

9. Become the fabulous woman you know you are already!

10. Be the mom you are meant to be.

Here's how it works:

We will have 8 (eight) group coaching sessions over the course of 100
days:

1. Day 1 of 100: A group, in-person session with all participants.
We'll review your goals and desired outcomes, including your shiny
new 100-Day Action Plan, and we'll discuss your current challenges
and how to navigate them.

2. Six (6) pre-scheduled group calls.

3. Session 8, Day 100 of 100 – Review of the past 100 Days.

You will be assigned to and work with a buddy for additional support
and to stay on track!

Investment: This Program is provided at no cost. (Future programs
will be priced at $497 per person.) In return, you commit to attend
each session, do each and every homework assignment and allow me to
use you as a case study in my upcoming book, Success and the Single
Mom.

Class limited to 24 people.

To be considered for participation, take our survey here prior to
June 3rd. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=_2fcqfJEf8OCm_2bCfGP27IGkw_3d_3d

DARK SKIES TICKETS TO GO ON SALE SATURDAY APRIL 12 @ NOON PST

TICKETS:
Tickets to The Dark Skies Arts Festival, June 19-22 at Mojave Drums near Meadview, Arizona are going on sale this Saturday 4/12/08 at twelve noon PST under the following price structure:
FIRST TIER: 75 tickets @ $75
SECOND TIER: 150 tickets @ $95
THIRD TIER: The remaining 75 tickets will be $125
Gift Tickets: we have a very limited number of gift tickets available where we trade you admission for your work on site. See below.

ATTENDANCE CAPS AND NO GATE SALES THIS YEAR
We are capping attendance at 300 and there will be NO GATE SALES this year! Advance ticket sales will cut off about a week out from the event. Under 18 with parents only, kids under 12 are free. No in-out, no pets.

Dark Skies is the southern Nevada regional burn, now to be held across the dam in Arizona! All of Burning Man’s 10 principals apply including leave no trace, no vending and the gift economy.

THEME CAMPS
We are requesting that all theme camps register and determine the minimum required amount of space that you can fit into. We are also asking most participants to drop their camping gear and park out by the front gate in order to keep the event site open and allow art cars, pedestrian traffic, and bicycles to traverse the site safely. There’s plenty of room on this site for our event, we just have to use it judiciously and creatively. Please please please register your theme camp and art so we know who’s coming!

FIRE
Dark Skies 2008 is operating in a high fire season, and in an area of pristine high desert in a beautiful Joshua Tree Forest. Dark Skies Fire Safety will be operating under the jurisdiction of Meadview Arizona Fire Dept. All final decisions regarding fire will be up to them.

•	Fire performers will be allowed i/e: poi staffs breathers and all other hand held fire performance toys.
•	Small propane flame effects; ie hand held puffers and small lpg flame effects with neither having a vertical flame length exceeding 10ft unless pre approved will be allowed.
•	Fire barrels; fire barrels will be provided and maintained by event staff and will be in community areas.
•	No personal burn barrels and fireplaces unless pre-approved in advance of the event.
•	All generators used will be required to have an abc fire extinguisher and a pointed shovel within 20 ft at all times.
•	Tentative fire times will be between 7pm and sunrise. Fire times will be subject to blackout in case of winds sustained in excess of 12 mph.
•	All fire artists and participants must check in with DSFS. DSFS has the final say when it comes to fire of any kind.
•	Smoking is to be conducted on developed and groomed areas only, no smoking is allowed in the vegetated areas of the event site. Leave no trace; never let it hit the ground.
•	Fireworks of any kind are illegal and banned 100% at this event.
•	All fire activities will be restricted to fire performance areas and then only at pre approved times. We will clearly mark these areas on site.

Important fire information; All fire activities may be banned in the case of a regional “red flag alert”. A red flag alert occurs when high winds regionally create a situation whereby all fire activities are banned. This is not the same as the high fire season ban which runs April 15 – Nov 15 and for which we are applying for variances too for this event. This is also NOT the same situation we had last time where CCFD “stuck it to us” at the last minute and bummed a lot of people out. Our hosts want to see fire at this event. But we have to play by their rules. Lets hope for low winds on the weekend of the event!

VOLUNTEER!
The heart of any regional event is the volunteers, and we love our volunteers! We have limited Volunteer opportunities available for Dark Skies.

Please check the website and the event’s news group which is located here
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/

Pictures of the new site are here
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/pictures/3-08sitesurveyweb/index.htm

The event’s website is understandably undergoing some changes since the move and is here
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/

Thank you to the community, to our wonderful volunteers, and to all of the artists and theme camps that make this and every regional event so darn special! We cannot do any of this without YOU.

Dark Skies Budget is posted

Greetings and dusty road weary hugs from Dark Skies!

We are pleased to announce that the pre event budget for DS ‘08 is posted for your perusal, dissection, and discussion.
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/about/accounting.php

There’s still a couple items missing and we actually got the Lincoln County numbers this afternoon so those are wrong. And yes ‘vehicles’ does indeed have an “H” in it. But you’ll get the idea of what it costs to produce this event. Based on this, and a senior staff meeting happening this weekend, we anticipate TICKETS GOING ON SALE, ON SATURDAY MARCH 1ST AT 12 NOON PST .

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter, but we can’t reply on every list that this message has been posted to, there are simply too many lists out here to monitor them all. So please direct all correspondence to/at us on the event’s Yahoo group, which is located here
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/

A full email blast with volunteer information, art, and theme camp registration is forthcoming. Just keeping you the community in the loop, so watch this space and we hope to see you all out on Delamar Lake this June!

Love and (yummy) cookies,

Greetings Noise Fans
Hope everyone is recovering well! Last night I brought some hoops for the purpose of sharing, with no regrets! But now it makes me sad to say that my LED hoop is missing. I looked in every corner of the Aruba and never spotted it. This hoop had ten slow changing rainbow colored lights. The tubing is white and was decorated with black and red stripe gaffer tape.

I work at an innercity at risk school and my kids perform with the LED hoops I provide.

If anyone has information that can lead and unite me with my hoop, please call 702-683-2871 or e-mail @ moonshadow2@cox.net

Thanks
Kaya

P.S. what goes around comes around :)

Greetings and much dusty love from the Dark Skies Fire Arts Festival!

Currently we are waiting on the cost recovery numbers from the BLM and costs from Lincoln County on top of those. Once we have all of that we will be able to produce a working budget and price the tickets logically (who knew?).

We will then announce the start of ticket sales. The tickets are printed and boy are they purty! It’s been somewhat quiet around here at DS HQ the past few months but rest assured that the hamsters are working overtime on this year’s event. We have much to announce, we have much to discuss, we have many needs from you the community as well. This is just a short note to let you know that the dates and location have been set.
June 19-22, 2008 and yes it will be on Delamar Lake in Lincoln County.
Much more coming soon, BOOM!

Greetings

My name is Cindy. I live in Las Vegas, NV. Although currently I find myself in the UK. I have been drumming for about 6 years. I have dabbled in many forms of the drum. Middle
Eastern, African and a bit of Indian. Drumming is something that I
absolutely love!

A few years back we started a list of drummers in the Las Vegas Area,
non-denominational drumming list so to say. Any type of drumming is
welcomed. I help moderate this list and would like to extend an
invitation to you to join the Vegas Drum Circle list.

This helps if you are planning to come to town and want to plug in.
Wishe to share a drumming event that may be happening or if you are planning to
come to Vegas to teach or looking for places/people to jam. Also if you have new drumming material, teaching wise or music wise to share, really the possibilities are
endless! Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.
Thanks

Trying to connect the world of drummers one drum and a time!

Much Love to you,

Hi all!

I need to find a store somewhere in Las Vegas that sells CD racks.
You'd think it would be easier, but NOPE. Its not.

I've tried Target and Walmart, and there is nothing there.
I have upwards of 500 CDs, and need somplace to store them so they are not hidden in my closet.
Does anyone have any ideas of where I might find something to accomodate my ever expanding music collection?

Thanks!
~Yasmin

btw, I don't care where it is. I'm in North, but if I have to drive to Henderson, I will. :)

This week, Las Vegas is hosting the Americans in the Arts conference titled: Risk and Reward: Balancing Acts in Arts and Community. You can find out more about the conference by following this link:
http://www.artsusa.org/events/2007/convention/default.asp or here http://tinyurl.com/25cmh8

Burning Man is going to be a part of the conference, with Larry Harvey, Christine Kristin (Lady Bee), Leslie Pritchett, and Louis Brill presenting “Burning Man. Emergent Culture”. The presentation will take place on Sunday afternoon as part of the Public Art track for the conference.

To give our local community an opportunity to honor this occasion, there will be a reception on Friday, June 1, 2007, from 6 to 8 pm at the Twelve18 Gallery, 1218 S. Main Street, to welcome Larry, Leslie, and Lady Bee to Las Vegas and where the Black Rock Arts Foundation (the non-profit arm of Burning Man - www.blackrockarts.org) will announce its intention to sponsor a community art installation in Las Vegas. This event will be held in conjunction with Las Vegas' First Friday event, a monthly celebration of art in Las Vegas' downtown arts district.

Please join us for libations and light hors doeuvres, a chance to visit with our distinguished guests, and to learn more about the Black Rock Arts Foundation and its mission to build community through interactive art installations. We hope to see you there!

For questions regarding this event, or to find out how you can participate, please contact Joe Olivier (aka Exact Lee) at jro@jroworkshop.com

From the Americans in the Arts Program, here is a description of their presentation:

Burning Man: Emergent Culture

Burning Man organizers will discuss the community-based, interactive public art of Black Rock City, a temporary city of 40,000 that exists for one week annually in the Nevada desert. The nature of the art itself will be discussed, as well as its organization, funding, and management. The challenges of bringing this unique kind of public art from the desert to urban environments will also be explored.

DARK SKIES - THE SINGULARITY EVENT Press release for March 6, 2007

Hello Dark Skies –Singularity community. Got a few minutes?

Here is the latest news in regards to our permits and the BLM. Feel free to forward this public press release wherever you’d like.

THE NUMBERS.
DS/Sing is going to cost between $25 and $29K to produce. The initial draft of the accounting (pre event) is posted here http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/about/accounting.php it’s still pretty rough and is lacking a bunch of stuff, but you’ll see the nexus of what this takes. We post this in advance of the event because we want YOU the community to buy into this thing and see what it takes to produce it, and realize that nobody is getting rich here. And we want you to buy tickets too. How’s that for blatant honesty? It’s an extremely risky venture at best producing these events. Our ONLY source of income comes from YOU buying tickets to the event.
Anyway…..
BLM Law Enforcement (LE) is asking for $34,600 in LE fees for the May event.
Event budget - <>$27K, LE fees - $34k. See a problem here?

After being approved for the upcoming May event this past December, we have received a ‘Cost Recovery Estimate’ in February from BLM that is far in excess of the entire event’s gross budget.

WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO NOW.
We are prepared to file an appeal with the BLM in Sacramento and Washington to contest these fees, and concurrently file an application for a ‘stay’ to keep our permitting process moving forward during the appeal process, which could take up to two years. We intend to show that BLM is in error in its cost estimate for our little event, and further, that bias, prejudice, and unfair treatment has occurred numerous times at our events. Those of you who’ve receive citations know what we’re talking about here. They simply ‘don’t’ like us’ but that has no bearing on the facts unfortunately.

We have a meeting scheduled with BLM for this Thursday here in the Las Vegas office to begin this process and attempt to talk some sense into these guys. I/E: How can you charge more than the event brings in for LE alone? Maybe we’ll just hire cops and not have any potties? For that matter, maybe the cops will let us s**t in their armored Chevy Suburban cruisers out on Roach Lake? Dunno. We’re pretty sure that we will prevail in this effort, and it’s a very challenging and productive time right now and a lot of work is going on behind the scenes on many levels to make the May event happen. This letter is keeping you all in the loop. This letter is pulling back that curtain. Many of you just want to come to the event, set up and have fun, and we love that and we love you, but many of you also want to know what’s going on behind the scenes too. Many of you find this process fascinating, you nerds.
That’s what this letter is about.

What does this situation mean? Is Dark Skies – The Singularity Event getting canceled? Moved? Turned into a Pentecostal Snake show? Are we going full on commercial and hiring the Chilly Peppers to pay for the cops? NO WAY! That will never happen. The May event is ON and we’re doing it on Roach Lake, May 17-20, just like we always have. What this means quite frankly is that we have to jump through yet more hoops in order to use the land that we own and pay for, from the Bureaucracy that we pay for too. We know our rights, we have the facts, and we have YOUR support in producing one of the best events on the west coast. And that feels pretty damn good guys. We also have some of Burningman’s resources now being brought to bear on this situation as well and we are extremely grateful for that. Additional resources are coming on line even as we speak. The reason is, that we are ethical and responsible; the facts are that we are in the right, and that BLM is simply wrong in trying to over regulate us and regulate us out of existence. BLM’s Cost Recovery Estimate is simply in error.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
What do we need from you guys now? What can you do to help? Well for starters, we are NOT going to start a letter writing campaign. And, we are not going start calling BLM and whining about this situation. Also, no picket lines or clown, bunny, or santa rampages at their offices either; it will do no good at this point, trust us. We need to work collectively as a group within the letter of the law and BLM’s regulations to find a solution to this problem. This is not the time for emotions, this is the time for clear rational action and we are about to do just that. Again, we’re not asking you to DO anything at this point except buy tickets; we just really want everyone reading this to more fully understand what goes into events of this type. One can only imagine the pain the Burningman has gone through in figuring this out over the past 15 years. Anyone who thinks this is easy should give it a try sometime. G’head, we dare you.

THE APPEALS PROCESS
Want some more info? Ok then, in the spirit of both community and true open source here is the basis for our complaint and for what will become the appeal should that unfortunate action become necessary. And we really hope it can be avoided at our meeting in two days. This is our rationale for appealing fees in excess of the event’s total budget. We allege the following:

1.	That BLM is over charging us for Law Enforcement for our event far in excess of that called for in other events of this type. BLM standards for ‘all ages family events’ are one law enforcement officer per 1000 participants. Our current ratio is 1/90. (see #7 below)
2.	That a history of abuse, bias, and discrimination exists and that our event is being treated differently than any other events of this type. This affects us adversely and therefore a stay should be granted to allow the permitting to proceed.
3.	That arbitrary and capricious standard’s are being applied to us on many levels.
4.	That we have a history of just one stipulation violation in four previous events on the same site, which was minor and promptly corrected. (fireworks)Therefore there is no reason to have three observers as part of our cost recovery estimate or stipulations. (see #7 below)
5.	That though we have complained in writing to BLM about abuse and dereliction of duties by LE on two different occasions, those complaints went unanswered and ignored and instead we find ourselves in the current situation.
6.	That BLM is attempting to charge us an amount, greater than the total gross budget of our event. This precludes the event from ever happening. This not only violates our civil rights, but that it negates BLM’s mandate to preserve our public lands for public use. In short, we believe BLM is attempting to regulate us out of existence and exclude us while allowing other events of this type to occur. This affects us adversely and therefore a stay should be granted to allow the permitting to proceed.
7.	That in our four events held on this site, and contrary to BLM’s own internal regulations, no After Action Reports have been filed for any of our events, and that therefore, this shows neither precedent nor reason for our user fees being increased for event number 5 by a factor of over 1600%. This affects us adversely and therefore a stay should be granted to allow the permitting to proceed.
8.	That the Closure area that BLM is requiring us to adhere to is 350 times larger than Burningman’s per capita. This huge closure area is completely unworkable for an event of this size. We wish to be held to the same standard as Burningman in this regard. Precedent has been set for these types of events. This affects us adversely and therefore a stay should be granted to allow the permitting to proceed.

As you can see, we’ve done quite a bit of work on this matter and we’re fairly confidant that we will prevail once the facts supporting these claims have been presented, and rest assured that we do have the documentation to back this stuff up. If any of YOU have anything to add to this please contact us OFF LIST and get involved. This is going out to too many lists (worldwide) to have public dialogs on all of them, though we would happy to discuss it on the main DS/Sing list which is here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DARKSKIES_LASVEGAS/
And remember that BLM and LE is already on most of our lists anyway in case you hadn’t guessed. (Hi guys)
We’re not looking for emotional or hostile responses. This is not ‘fight the man’ time, but your ideas are certainly welcome and encouraged. What are we missing here?

That’s pretty much it. Fun reading huh?

GOOD NEWS
Now for some good news! We have over a dozen theme camps signed on. We have a truck load of art on the way from LA and we’re going to have a massive art gallery in center camp, (whoo hoo!). We also have major pyro and fire art coming in from all over the west coast, and tickets sold in 8 states so far. YOUR SUPPORT is the key to making this all happen. Thank you all! To be quite honest, what we need is to sell tickets and we have been selling pretty well so far so thank you for that too. The current count is somewhere around 180 tickets sold in advance, which puts us farther ahead than any other event we’ve done and well on the way to reaching our cap, which will be somewhere around 600 or 700 people.
Please visit our website at
http://darkskies.vegasartists.com/index.php
to learn more about Dark Skies – The Singularity Event and to sign up to help out on site. Volunteers are the key to making this work so please get involved.

Thank you again for your continued support of YOUR southwest regional burn. Thank you for buying tickets. Thank you for helping. And thank you for daring to dream big with us and make this happen, in this wonderful venue, and on this level of both complexity and content. With your love and support, this is going to completely and totally rock. Because as we’ve always said since May of ‘05: ‘we just found the site, it is YOU who make the event so special’.
And you do.

Much dusty love,
The Singularity Core

24 hours left for the cheap Dark Skies/Singularity tickets

Greetings from the Singularity Core!

We are pleased to announce that the first tier discount tickets to Dark Skies – The Singularity Event have almost sold out and that these ticket go off sale in about 24 hours at midnight on January 16 either way. Thank you all who have purchased these discounted tickets and thank you all as well who have waited to purchase the $50 tickets. Every $50 ticket we sell from here on out offsets the $40 tickets we’ve already sold. So thank you all!

Recent developments: During the past two weeks we already have 5 theme camps and several artists registered for Dark Skies – The Singularity Event.
Nightmare Nevada (who created the demon Zamuel from 10/06) have agreed to do one of the icons and they are also planning on doing a full on theme camp this time! This event is already shaping up to be one of the premier events on the west coast for 2007 and we are predicting that we will hit our attendance cap of 700 humans. This event WILL sell out, so buy your tickets now if your really plan on attending. FIRE PERFORMERS: We will again be approved by CCFD for fire spinners and performers, and we are working on the compressed gasses permits as well so please come!

Dark Skies – The Singularity Event is the Burningman regional for southern Nevada. This is YOUR South West Regional Burn. It is a leave no trace event and all of Burningman’s 10 principals apply. Children 12 and under are in for free and there is no in-out except for special cases and working artists. No vending, this is a gift economy.

Please visit our website http://darkskies.vegasartists.com for more information and tickets.

Thank you all again and we are looking forward to seeing all of you in May if not before at one of your awesome events! It just keeps getting better and better.

DARK SKIES - THE SINGULARITY EVENT: TICKETS ON SALE

Greetings from The Singularity Core…

We are very excited to announce that tickets to Dark Skies – The Singularity Event, have now gone on sale, and our web site is live and ready for action. Which means theme camps and artists can now register online.

D.S./Singularity is YOUR South West regional event! And, it represents a major step forward in the regional network as a whole.

Dark Skies – ‘The Singularity Event’ will be held May 17-20, 2007 on Roach Lake. As always, this is a leave no trace event, there are no in-out privileges and there is no vending of any kind, except for ice sales. There are no pets allowed, and kids under 18 must be with parents or responsible adults. This is our 5th event on the beautiful Roach Lake playa south of Las Vegas and the second joint regional event held on the site.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT THIS TIME?
We’re glad you asked!
For starters, we are allowing kids 12 and under in for free this time! (With parents of course) We hope this encourages more families to attend this event and it is something that many of you have asked for, so there you go. Come on out and play with us mom & dad!

Second, the ticket price structure is as follows:
We are doing an ‘early bird special’ from NOW until Jan 16 for $40. It is hoped that these discounted tickets will encourage those of you with limited incomes to attend DS-Singularity and this is something that you asked for too. Those of you who can afford the higher tier tickets please buy those okay?

There are 100 of these discounted tickets available, so when they’re gone they are gone.

NOW until Jan 16 or until the first 100 are gone: $40
Jan 17 – April 1: $50
April 2nd – May 16: $75
At the gate: $100

Though the event permit ends on Sunday, we encourage you to camp with us on Sunday night. Stay and help clean up on your public land and, the decompression starts promptly at sundown. (It’s Vegas baby, we move fast around here!)

WE NEED YOUR HELP.
The heart of any event of this type is our wonderful volunteers. We need gate captains, earth guardians, and perimeter and security staff. We are also looking for someone with a box blade grader to help improve the road’s into the site. We need volunteers of all types and skills! Merely purchasing a ticket to this event does not constitute participation. Participation means getting involved. The way to get involved is to volunteer and help the event run smoothly. PLEASE GET INVOLVED, WE NEED YOU ALL. This is YOUR event, this is not a spectator event and it only works if we all help.

LATEST NEWS:
BLM has approved Dark Skies – The Singularity Event! We are a firm go and the site is locked for that weekend in May. We will be working with a ‘Hard Closure’ of the site again and we are currently talking to BLM about the exact dimensions and boundaries of that closure. We are much further ahead in the planning process than in any of the previous 4 events held on the site. This does not mean we are out of the woods, it means we’re simply getting better at this as we move along. And that is in no small part due to YOUR SUPPORT. When we say ‘This is your Regional Event’ that is not some catch phrase, we really mean it. We could not be doing this without your help. Thank you all!

Please visit the Dark Skies – The Singularity Event website here http://darkskies.vegasartists.com where you can find art and theme camp registration, tickets, volunteer opportunities, and other vital information. Many thanks and major props go out to ‘School Girl’ Randy Winsett for his hard work in making this site rock!

See you guys in May and thank you all so, so much!
BOOM
The DS/Sing ‘Core’.

Las Vegas TOWN HALL MEETING Saturday 11/16

The CAC is hosting the first ever Las Vegas Town Hall
Meeting on December 16’th! Join The CAC along with
Vegas Vortex, The Las Vegas Jam Band Society, the Las
Vegas Burningman community, and VegasArtists.com as
we host the first ever OPEN FORUM to talk about our
communities and how we might be able to collaborate on
future projects. Because the future is very bright indeed!
This event will be streamed on the internet in real time with
the ability to ask the panel questions online as well.

Tell us what you are up to! Offer a suggestion on how to
change things! Help us all make Las Vegas a better place
for all sub cultures and communities.

We are encouraging all artists, performers, and organizers
to attend. This will be an open forum, first come first
served. It’s an experiment so we don’t know what’s going to
happen. But one thing’s for sure, with 1.6 million people
living here it’s time we started bringing these communities
together! For too long many of us have toiled along on
parallel courses, constantly re-inventing the wheel. Why not
join forces and make ALL of Las Vegas a place we can call
home?

This is a bring-your-own chair event, and is also BYOB.
Bring some to share as well!

The TOWN HALL MEETING will be held on Saturday,
December 16, 2006 from 3pm (sharp) until 6pm at the
CAC’s gallery, which is at the Holesum Bread Lofts,
231 West Charleston Blvd. Suite 110. It’s just east of I-15
on Charleston. Here’s the map: http://tinyurl.com/y3phsu

Are there any LOCAL Las Vegas blogs that you think I should add to my list? They must be ACTIVE. If the most recent post is mid-October or earlier, they probably won't qualify.

SPACED INVADERS LINEUPS FOR TONIGHT!

VegasArtists.com’s SPACED INVADERS First Friday after party is tonight! Spaced Invaders is the one after party to bring the feeling of First Friday on into the night, with awesome local artists, a stellar DJ line up, and killer local and regional bands all performing and showing for your pleasure.

This month we have a fantastic line up for you as we forge full steam into our second year of being Las Vegas’ premiere First Friday after party. And that is due in no small part to YOU the community supporting us. We and all of the artists who’ve displayed, performed, and shown with us thank you all! Here’s what’s happening tonight, this is not to be missed!

LIVE BANDS:
First up is A DOG NAMED DUTCH from Las Vegas, this powerhouse trio lists such bands as Queens of the Stone age, STP, Weezer Chevelle, Kiss, Alice in Chains, and Better Off Dead and many others among their influences, and they are set to rock the house this evening!
http://www.myspace.com/adognameddutch

Next up is AGE OF REASON also from Las Vegas, this four piece roack group lists such bands as Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, Camper Van Beethoven, The Sisters of Mercy, Smashing Pumpkins, and Kings X among it’s influences and if it’s my space testimonials are any indication you’re in for one hell of a show.
http://www.myspace.com/ageofreason#Scene_2

Finally, coming in from L.A. this month we have 7K, this 4 piece modern rock quartet is simply awesome! This reporter has heard their CD and I really like them and I think you will too. We are thrilled to have them coming up for Spaced Invaders tonight!
http://www.myspace.com/7k

ARTISTS:
Those of you who have been to Spaced Invaders before know that we never let you down on the quality of art displayed. Anyone can (and does) throw a party, this is something more, and we are extremely proud of our record in promoting and selling local artists works over the past two years. And as always we never ask our artists for a commission on their sales. This month is no exception with a stellar line up including Korey Erra - Acrylic and oil on canvas and hand made Pendants.
M Mellon - Mixed media: Paitings and sculpture,
And Martini (shaken or stirred? Sorry I thought it was funny) - who produces Figurative and still life expressions through acrylics and pencil
Plus several others who’s names escape me in my sleep deprived state. Rest assured it’s a world class art show nonetheless.

DJ’s:
What Spaced Invaders would be complete without some of the best DJ’s in town laying it down for you listening and dancing pleasure? Again, this month is no exception as we mix it up with 3 of the best local monsters spinning trance, deep house, jungle, and breaks. If you want to hear the latest Britney Spears re-mix go pay the cover for one of the mega clubs. But if you want to shake your a*s to the real sounds of the underground come to Spaced Invaders! This months line up is Kelix (D&B), Eric Edward (House), DJ Focus (House), and Paul G (Breaks). This line up is one of the best we’ve ever had and we are extatic that these guys have agreed to lay it down for YOU. Come out and support!

DETAILS:
Spaced Invaders is held at the Aruba Hotel, 1215 Las Vegas Blvd S. Two blocks south of Charleston on the strip. It’s the big green building on the east side of the strip. It starts at 9:30pm as First Friday is ending and goes until at least 3 or 4 in the morning. This is a 21+ event, cover is $5, with a $1 discount for Friends of First Friday. The Aruba has great drink prices all night long and food until midnight or so. Great food prices as well. Here’s a map http://tinyurl.com/rhydv

Thank you again for your support of Spaced Invaders! We could not do this month in and month out without the support of you the community. Anyone who says Vegas has no scene hasn’t seen Spaced Invaders. Hope to see you all there! The VA.com team.

Greetings Fellow Tribers’

Recently I have been turned onto POI! It is a wonderful art and so much fun! A few of us in the Las Vegas area have met, practiced and played together. This practice started us talking about others in the community who might want to seriously play also… Is that you?
All skill levels welcomed, beginner to advance. We can learn from each other. I started a tribe for us so we could have a common place to chat. Spinning V Fire http://tribes.tribe.net/spinning-v-fire

Since nobody, so far, has decided to lead the LVSS Meetup.com group, a new MySpace.com group was created to facilitate future "meetups" using the Myspace "EVENTS" system.

The advantage is that Myspace is totally free and we can still use the better message board on Meetup.com for messages, etc.

Don't Sign TASC Petition

Think Before you Sign!!

The pro-TASC (Tax and Spend Control) campaign is now in full swing. What is TASC? It is a ballot measure being pushed by ultra-conservatives that will set us back years in our work to improve education funding, health care services and funding for the needs of working families in Nevada. TASC is intended to restrict revenue and expenditure growth, but it effectively binds the hands of elected officials.

According the PLAN (the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada), "Colorado has had a TASC-style law for 14 years, and it has been devastating to their quality of life and rankings on indicators of social well being. K-12 education spending in Colorado fell by more than $300 per pupil compared to the national average from 1992 to 2000. Colorado now ranks 49th in expenditures for k-12 schools."

On a daily basis there are two people from a group calling itself "The Citizens for a Better Nevada" are on UNLV's campus (in front of the Moyer Student Union), encouraging passers-by to sign the TASC petition. Their initial pitch is to encourage students, faculty and staff to sign an anti-imminent domain petition and then, just coincidentally, sign the TASC petition.

If you are on the campus of UNLV, encourage passers to "THINK BEFORE YOU SIGN." Tell would-be signers that TASC will cripple Nevada by cutting off any new funding for education, health care, new roads, etc. etc.

________________________________________________________________

You may be surprised who is against TASC. It isn't just progressive organizations who oppose TASC, but it's also oopsed by main stream Republicans and even the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce!

On February 14, Sean Whaley of the Las Vegas Review Journal reported:

The [Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce's] Government Affairs Committee said it is opposed to the Tax and Spending Control petition because it does not address the largest long-term financial liabilities of the state and because it is "likely to result in unintended consequences that would be difficult to remedy."
________________________________________________________________

If you see petition gatherers in yoru area, call the PLAN hotline at 775-315-3682.

Help stop TASC. The Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada is organizing a counter-campaign. Please call this number if you see petition gatherers for the TASC initiative: 775-315-3682

PLAN is also looking for volunteers who will donate an hour of their time to go out with "Decline to Sign" posters where the signature gatherers are working. If you can spare some of your time, call the hotline: 775-315-3682

Building in the Desert

I just wanted to throw this idea out there instead of keeping it to myself. I hope one or more of you will find it interesting and share it with any builders or architects you know, or even students currently pursuing an architecture or civil engineering degree.

Recall the HUGE rather mushroom shaped buildings of the recent Star Wars movies? Wouldn't that be a great design to use here in Las Vegas?

BENEFITS:

A large domed surface to cast shadow on pedestrain spaces below.

A large domed surface that could be covered with solar panels if and when they become financially viable.

A large building with ample interior space yet taking up a one-half (or less) sized "footprint" of pricey real estate at ground level.

Shade; Hundreds of square yards of shade as refuge from the desert heat.

Heat deflection; If our architecture kept the sun's heat six, eight or ten stories above street level, the ground would remain cooler much longer into the day. And if the heated surfaces (the roofs) of the buildings could cool at night in a less congested fashion, the "developed areas" around them could also cool faster. Heat radiates upward, but with overpasses, skybridges and towering vertical structures I bet the current downtown "stripscape" cools much slower than the open spaces of (say) Summerlin, or areas with fewer tall buildings.

Building of this type would also provide natural refuge from the occasional rain storm (or hail).

Helicopter landing pads could easily be added to the top center portion of the building's design. No more worrying about landing at street level, and this could free up additional space at McCarran airport for other development or use.

DOWNSIDE:

I cannot really think of any. There could be problems with firefighting or building evacuation, but a structure with a round base (or square base) could easily incorporate independent elevator columns located in each of the four courners of the base structure. Or in the case of a round tower, maybe six elevator columns evenly spaced around the circumfrence of the building's round footprint. The buildings could even be connected by skybridges four, six or eight stories above the ground, so occupants of one building could be evacuated to an adjacent building in the event of fire or other emergency.

I think it is high time we put the "art" back into architecture and gave up the traditional square skyscraper design. The Wynn hotel has done this but the practice needs to be taken even further. The entire environment of Las Vegas could be improved with the right designs and engineering, not to mention making headlines around the world for capturing the imagination of George Lucas' designers and making them a reality.

Tourism and the economy in general would benefit. There are millions of Star Wars fans around the world that would come to a city "modeled" after their favorite movie, with some even deciding to relocate here permanently.

And finally, one cliche in the face of modern terrorist threats - "The bigger they are, the harder they fall." Except in this case I am speaking of the difficulty any group would have in taking down a true structural "castle" with a wider base and broader support infrastructure.

Just an idea. I hope it inspires someone to imagine Tomorrow's Las Vegas.

ENTREPRENEURIAL Ideas Working Group

What happened to that last good idea you had?
Tried of working for someone else?
Ready to network with other economically challenged residents?
~or~ Ready to help other economically challenged residents?

I have ideas, you have ideas, we all have ideas! It is time to do something with them! Don't wait for an inventors competition to come around. Turn your ideas into profit generating activities now!

I want to form a group of Las Vegas area residents with imagination, creativity, intelligence and inspiration! One that can become A NEW economic force in the valley! By taking ideas from each members and turning them into working concepts. By taking them off the shelf and putting them into practice!

Each person will retain 100% of the rights to their idea, unless they "grant" a percentage to another member/resident. And in turn we will all benefit from each others suggestions and ability to "fill in the missing pieces". Supplement your 40 hours a week income with 2 or 3 hours and the goal of having it pay MORE than the 40 you work for someone else!

People I think COULD support and benefit from this group:
Admin. Assistants! - Have you missed a way to automate a daily task?
Amateur Marketers! - Was that last television commercial you saw dumb??
Digital photographers! - How many hours are you NOT using your camera?
Pizza Shop Owners! - Is there a more reliable way to TAKE ORDERS?
Realtors! - Do you "reinvent the wheel" every othe day?

If this is something that interests you, contact me! Let's end the paycheck to paycheck non-sense together!

EMERGENCY: Now is the time to pressure our senators about Alito

Let's flood the switchboards for the next three days!

Senators Kerry and Kennedy have announced a call for fillibuster.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/01/26/alito/index.html

Kerry called on activists to pressure Dem Senators who are against Alito but wavering on filibsuter, esp (of all people) Feinstein. To date, 3 Dems have come out for Alito and 2 said they oppose a filibuster, so they'll have to change someone's mind.

CALL NOW

Senator Reid: 1-866-736-7343 (free)
Reid: 1-202-224-6244

Say: "I am (give your name), and I am a constituent living at (supply address) . I want Senator Ried/Ensign to know that Nevadan's support a filibuster of Samuel Alito. Alito will move women's rights backwards, and put too much power in the hands of the President - that will result in continued illegal wire taps and infringement of American freedoms! A 'no' vote is not enough; the senator needs to support a filibuster."

At the very least call Reid. He is responsible for the Democratic filibuster.

Free Film at UNLV

The UNLV Women's Studies Department, in an effort to encourage dialogue on the intersection of gender, race and class issues, sponsors a year round film series. Each film is followed by a discussion led by a speaker with expertise in the film's subject matter. The screenings are free and open to the public. Doors open at 6 p.m. Unless otherwise noted, films are screened in CBC A106 on the UNLV Campus.

Visit http://unlvwmstfilm.blogspot.com/ for more information.

EYES ON THE PRIZE I & II

The Women's Studies Department in commemoration of Black History month will screen, EYES ON THE PRIZE, the most comprehensive film ever made documenting the struggle and triumph of the civil rights movement in America. Copyright restrictions have kept this epic from the public for the past 10 years.

We can't let that continue.

January 25, 2005 Time: 6:00 p.m. Place: CBC A106

Eyes on the Prize I: America’s Civil Rights Years

Episode 1: Awakenings 1954-1956

This program concentrates on the period from 1954 to 1956, highlighting the events that began the modern black freedom struggle. Prior to 1954, racism was rationalized under a "separate but equal" doctrine. It was during this time that existing organizations, local leaders and ordinary citizens became involved in the black freedom struggle. The lynching in Mississippi of 14-year-old Emmett Till led to a trial that caught the attention of the national news media. The personal courage of Rosa Parks triggered the 1955-1956 Montgomery, AL, bus boycott.

Episode 2: Fighting Back 1957-1962

Public schools became a battlefield when blacks rejected the notion of "separate but equal" education. This episode explores the critical 1954 Supreme Court BROWN vs. BOARD OF EDUCATION OF TOPEKA decision; the story of nine black teenagers who integrated Little Rock's Central High School in 1957; and James Meredith's enrollment at the University of Mississippi in 1962. The program identifies the national organizations involved in the struggle to integrate schools and how they affected the freedom struggle.

Episode 3: Ain't Scared of Your Jails 1960-1961

In 1960, large numbers of college students and young people began to get involved in the black freedom struggle. The focus of the black protest changed from legal battles to personal and group challenges against racial inequities. This program focuses on four related stories: the lunch counter sit-ins of 1960, the formation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC); the impact of the movement on the 1960 presidential campaign; and the freedom rides of 1961.

This is the first in a 5 week series of screenings of all 14 episodes (three per evening) Average running time for each episode is 60 minutes.

BlankCanvasLV.com presents...

BASS BINGE
breaks + drum & bass

Friday, December 16, 2005

@ The Bunkhouse
124 S. 11th St., Downtown LV
MAP/PICS: http://BunkhouseLV.com/aboutus.html
21+, cheap drinks, great food, no dress code or cover charge!!

Since this is the 6-month anniversary of Bass Binge, we wanted to put together something extra-special... this month, we have some very special guests hosted by our friends from Ladyfest L.V. as well as several special guests of our own, so arrive as early as 7pm for the opening bands and stay as late as you can! Bass Binge starts at midnight as usual, and we intend to enjoy the extra-thick sound we have arranged for that evening into the wee hours :)

Opening bands hosted by Ladyfest L.V., 7pm-12am:

FLASPAR
myspace.com/flaspar

DISTRUKTO MIZUNO
myspace.com/distruktomizuno

VIM CRONY
myspace.com/vimcrony

+ feminist hip-hop duo all the way from Olympia, WA...

SCREAM CLUB!!!
myspace.com/screamclub
www.screamclub.com

"I was skeptical what two freaky white chicks could bring to hip-hop, but I have to say the shit was tight" - XXL

"Scream Club transports you to a world of energy and over-the-top fun" - Fischerspooner

"Scream Club links feminism to broader political stuggles and other modes of oppression. It's this more expansive form of feminism, as well as their driving beats, that enables them to speak to a bigger audience than their riot-grrrl predecessors, Le Tigre" - Bust

Then Bass Binge starts at midnight with a tag-team set by Urban-Breaks DJs Undecided vs. SoulKid:

UNDECIDED
(Urban-Breaks/MOB Records/Infected Logic) Sacramento
www.myspace.com/urbanbreaks

Download a mix by Undecided here: tinyurl.com/awep4

Undecided started spinning in Sacramento in 1998, where he hosted weekly events, before relocating to Seattle in 2004 where his Urban-Breaks crew has since expanded to include several regular events. His skills have allowed him to play with such talented artists as Uberzone, DJ Rap, Factor E, Trona, Influenza and Baby Anne. Please welcome Undecided to Las Vegas, and check out his recent release on MOB Records: Kiro vs. Undecided - Obsessive Nature feat. Six Kitten B.

vs. SOULKID
(Urban-Breaks/Lovetribe/F8/Baszic Elements) Seattle
www.myspace.com/soulkid

Soulkid, originally from Orlando, now resides in Seattle and DJs nationwide. He has already played Las Vegas a few times, and the word is out... ask around, Soulkid knows how to put it down! He'll be tag-teaming with his Urban-Breaks partner, Undecided. Get ready!

Followed by one of San Francisco's finest, from the Space Cowboy crew of Black Rock City:

KAPT'N KIRK
(Space Cowboys/Panda-moan-eum) San Francisco
www.spacecowboys.org

Download "Bicoastal Fury," a mix by Kapt'n Kirk here: tinyurl.com/86j6e

"Kapt'n" Kirk Martin has been DJing since 1999, when he started spinning hip-hop, trip-hop, and drum & bass as a DJ for his college radio station in Eugene, Oregon. In 2000, he returned to his native San Francisco and its explosive electronic music scene. Soon after, Kirk joined up with the Space Cowboys, a well-known Burning Man camp and DJ crew, and fell hard for the breaks genre. To this day he can be heard playing on the Space Cowboys’ infamous Unimog, an "audio/visual assault vehicle" featuring a DJ booth and 10,000 watt sound system, at the annual week-long Burning Man festival, and all over the city of San Francisco almost every weekend. Kirk favors the funky, nasty, and heavily hip-hop influenced breaks tunes and his explosive DJ sets always incorporate the freshest, most mind-bending sounds as well as elements of his musical roots, and many a naughty bassline.

Kapt’n Kirk’s musical joy ride has taken him from Burning Man to Los Angeles to New York City and beyond. He hosted House of Breaks, a breakbeat monthly at House of Shields, San Francisco, but has since moved on to Panda-Moan-Eum, a party he throws with a collective of Bay Area breaks DJs. Highlights for Kirk have been the Love Parade events of 2004 and 2005, when he played to thousands in the streets of San Francisco, and the Space Cowboys’ Breakfast of Champions parties that start at 6am every New Years Day and always end with insanity.

Then a late-night tag-team by Blank Canvas residents, and a closing set by one of L.V.'s hottest newcomers:

ABISS
(Blank Canvas/Liquid Ent./UBK) LV
myspace.com/abiss

Download "Plumpy funk," a mix by Abiss, here: tinyurl.com/ahsak

Abiss has been playing underground parties, weeklies, raves, & clubs for over 3 years, & has been producing original tracks for the past 2 years along with the L.V.-based production team known as the United Breakbeat Kru. He is currently a resident for both Liquid Ent. and Blank Canvas, and was voted top local DJ on a recent EternalBeats.net poll. See him open for Kimball Collins the next night, December 17, at Empire Ballroom!

vs. JONNY VIBE
(Blank Canvas/SB Productions/Technolo-G) LV

Blank Canvas co-founder and resident DJ Jonny Vibe originally hails from Milwaukee and has been spinning for over 10 years. Primarily a house/techno DJ, he spun breaks every other week as a resident at Kooler Tuesdays by Flizm Flozm for nearly 2 years. He currently hosts Technolo-G, a 2nd Friday techno monthly @ The Bunkhouse. Prepare for the madness as he and Abiss face off!

KNO-1
(D.U.N.E./Audio Therapy/Cataphonic) Ogden, UT

The kind people of D.U.N.E. host Audio Therapy on Sunday nights at The Art Bar. They discovered this recent Las Vegas transplant and his skills blew them away, so they made him a resident at their weekly. That's where he blew us away, and now we are excited to showcase his talent and passion behind the decks before you!

See you there!

RALLY for Reproductive Rights!

UNLV NOW (National Organization for Women) and Southern Nevada NOW are teaming up to rally in front of the offices of Nevada Senators Ensign and Reid against the nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. This is the nomination to the Supreme Court most Nevadans have always feared. Alito has made clear through his rulings and in memos he does not believe the "Right to Privacy" is protected by the U.S. Constitution. In other words, Alito does not believe a woman's right to birth control, emergency contraception or abortion is protected by the U.S. Constitution.

It's important that we show Nevada senators that we are not going to stand by and let this nominee sail through confirmation without notice. Help us hold our senators accountable for the way they vote (for or against confirmation). We need at least 100 people at this rally for the media to pay serious attention - bring your friends, co-workers, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, and anyone else who values the right to privacy. Visit http://www.snnow.org/rally.html . PLEASE, give the gift of time this year - come to the rally and bring friends. Help us tell our senators that we care about how they vote! It's cheap & easy. Mark this on your calendars - more information to follow.

CityLife Article: Save The Art Park!

http://myspace.com/blankcanvaslv

http://www.lvcitylife.com/articles/2005/11/23/music/fear%20and%20lounging/fearlounge.txt

If home is where the heart is, then Joey Kantor has taken things one violent step further: He's cracked open his ribcage, extracted his most vital organ and dropped it on the mantle of his humble abode, where it sits, red and throbbing, for all to not only see, but also to pick up, prod, fondle or puzzle over whenever they damn well please. That's the idea, anyway. See, Kantor, an "old Deadhead," has always wanted to erect a park on the almost 1-acre spread on South Boulder Highway he calls home. But not just any park. He wanted a "festival of design" -- something akin to the Oregon Country Fair held annually in a patch of woods near Eugene, which he attended for the first time last year.

While feasting on this woodsy juggernaut of arts and crafts, grub and oddball entertainment, Kantor realized: "My God, this is what I'm trying to do. Music pops up spontaneously. Art pops up spontaneously. Everybody's doing whatever." So Kantor, along with his brother Randy, have chipped and whittled and massaged that dream into a deliciously sloppy reality -- and that reality is the Art Park.

Problem is, that stubborn old party pooper The Man is lurking outside the chain-link fence enclosing the park, and he ain't playin'. Kantor needs cash -- not too much, but cash nonetheless -- and the security it buys "so me and my brother can be happy, and we can still have the Art Park," he says. "Otherwise, it's just gonna become a parking lot."

To carve up the park (which sits on property Kantor's family has owned since 1957) would be a crying shame. If nothing else, last Saturday's all-night party proved that. A platoon of DJs spinning everything from break beats to reggae, plus a host of artists displaying their wares, some spoken-word poets (yeah, I know) and other live acts (which includes both bands and the dizzy prick I had to wrest my lighter from) rounded out what almost everybody I spoke with that evening characterized as "diverse."

Except this kind of diversity doesn't come packaged in shiny shirts, sunglasses-at-night, bronze-creamed artificiality; it comes in hoodies, mohawks and random piercings. It comes from the sheer oddity of the Art Park, which is kind of like a cross between a junk yard and your friendly neighborhood squatterville, complete with bonfires and piles of discarded items (there's enough abandoned Schwinns laying around to launch a spontaneous bike race). Saturday night, in the dry cold-bite only the desert can bring, I trekked through the dirt lot and entered a tiny trailer where DJs Jonny Vibe and Steady Up spun a mix of reggae and hip-hop, popped into a shack where Kantor and some of his old Jerry Garcia-worshipping buds fucked around on their timeworn instruments and gazed at the globular cartoon countenances and martini glasses leering at me from canvases posted on the fence. And that's before I went into the house.

Dana Greenwald and Dan Akins of the promotions company Blank Canvas (the crew responsible for the third Friday Bunk House "Bass Binge" soiree) slapped this eclectic brouhaha together via "an all-out campaign," says Greenwald, to drag in those reclusive artist-types and, more importantly, their work. "A lot of times we're really heavy on the music, and we always want art to come out, but nobody really focuses on it," says Greenwald, who managed to finagle work from artists as far away as Alaska and Pennsylvania. "It was just really this great ripple effect."

One of those waves rippling through the house with his concoctions was another former Deadhead (with his scruffy beard and glasses, the dude could be Jerry Garcia) known as Feather. After chatting it up with Soul Kitchen's Edgar Reyes (who saved my ass by introducing vodka to my starved liver), I tramped into a back room and discovered two things: "Sexy Bitch" and uvart. The former, as Akins explained to me, is a sort of Blank Canvas mascot fashioned out of a silver mannequin torso and a cowboy hat, while the latter, as Feather explained to me, is a "multi-dimensional-black-light-art-3-D-abstract-experience." Whew.

As trance banged through the back room, I stopped to examine Feather's work and found the neon drip galloping across the prints an almost impenetrable buffet of hallucinatory images. So, yeah, it reminded me of long nights and early mornings spent staring at Florida palm trees groaning their disapproval at my predilection for milk -- before morphing into pus balls. "My work is a bridge to your subconscious realm. Everybody interprets my work differently," says Feather. Indeed.

Interpreting the Art Park (5960 S. Boulder Highway, formerly known as the Katherine Gianaclis Park for the Arts) and what it means to the 100 or so revelers downing Natural Ice from the can while watching the inclusive feminists (no, it's not an oxymoron) of the Vegas incarnation of the Lady Fest movement jam on their "outdoor coffee house stage" isn't as involved an endeavor. It's about safety. In our alienated culture of anxiety and false identity, the Art Park offers people of all types a tribal refugee camp -- a camp Kantor calls home, but is endangered for the rest of us.

And that unsettles Kantor.

"I'm trying to get a little more ... I'm a partner with my brother, and he's not an artist -- blah, blah, blah -- and we have to make it more secure. So we want to lease it out to people. There's a guy with a towing truck company, a garage that fits in here, and that'd be perfect," he says as techno booms out of his living room. "But I'd hate to see that happen. The Art Park is looking for a few good people who would like to make it live. I would love for someone to come in and lease it. My final idea would be turning it into a beautiful garden, get a nursery ..."

Ah, dreams.

MUTAYTOR back by popular demand!

Mutaytor in Vegas Tues 11/29 - $10 show at Empire Ballroom
Greetings guys and dolls....Matty here from Mutaytor. We have a last minute booking in vegas coming up the weekend after Thanksgiving, and we'd love some help spreading the word around to our fans and friends in Sin City! Our halloween show there was a BLOWOUT, and we'd love to see more of our freaky, smiling, dancing, glittered friends at this event!

Mutaytor is kind of like Blue Man Group meets Oingo Boingo at a barbecue at Cirque du Soleils house: stage show with 100 drums, djs, aeralists, fire dance, martial arts, 3D video...and serious craziness and dancing.

Tickets are only $10, and its a double-header that night with Mutaytor and Metal Skool, a Spinal Tap-esque comedy/heavy metal tribute show that is absolutely hilarious. The cover will get you into both shows, and its at a fatty brand new Vegas venue where you'll get a top-notch Mutaytor experience.

We'll be out that week working at a convention, and this is an early, mid-week show, and we can use all the help we can get promoting!

Tuesday November 29th, 2005
Special Early Low-Price Show!
Empire Ballroom - Las Vegas, NV
3765 Las Vegas Blvd South
www.empireballroom.com
SHOWTIME 7:00pm
Admission just $10!! - stay the whole night for music and fun
Featuring The Mutaytor
Also appearing "Metal Skool" - The Greatest Rock Comedy Show Ever!

There you have it! Please help pass this word around, and we cant wait to see our family and friends in Las Vegas after Thanksgiving!

Hi there!

I'm looking a reputable auto body in Las Vegas (if such a thing exists). I'd prefer to find one privately owned with honest, hard working blue collar worker types.

Any leads or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)

CELLULOID SUNDAY
independent//foreign//cult films
hosted by local film makers & fans

Sunday, November 6, 2005
8pm-11pm

every 1st Sunday @ The Bunkhouse
124 S. 11th St. (just south of Fremont, near Maryland Pkwy), Downtown Las Vegas
VIEW MAP/PICS HERE: http://BunkhouseLV.com/AboutUs.html

21+, cheap drinks, great food, comfy seats, loose teeth - no cover!!

Sh*thoof has been producing it's annual film festival in Las Vegas for over 3 years. Featuring mostly locally-produced, independent shorts, Sh*thoof promotes the idea that film school is not a prerequisite to make or enjoy a film... ANYONE can make and/or appreciate this creative medium.

A departure from their annual festival, this monthly gathering at The Bunkhouse is something new for Sh*thoof. Celluloid Sunday is designed to provide a regular meeting point in which anyone who enjoys being turned on to great flicks by a trusted source can do that in a comfortable environment with food, drinks, and friends. New participants are welcome and encouraged to submit their own films for showing at future annual festivals, and to meet and become involved with the local film community.

Each first Sunday of the month will feature a different guest presenter, who will surprise us with a selection of shorts, feature-lengths, dramas, documentaries, comedies, cartoons, vintage commercials - WHATEVER they feel is relevant and wish to share. Presenters may or may not be film makers themselves, but they will be active participants in the local culture in some way or another.

The guest presenter for the debut of Celluloid Sunday on November 6, 2005 will be GRAMM MATTHEW, who will be premiering a feature-length film by Las Vegas' own Gilbert Cuevas titled "Desert Rose," among other surprises. Gramm is currently the writer/artist for his own comic book series, "Disposable Graffitti," published by Aberrant, Inc. Disposable Graffitti follows the misadventures of one Brer Rappit and his crew, and has been billed as "the first manic-depressive comic book." Disposable Graffitti does not disappoint, and comes complete with its own soundtrack... you'll have to buy your own asprin. Keep up with Gramm's work by joining the Militant Monkey Yahoo Group. You can see more examples of his work in the "photos" section of that group.

BlankCanvasLV.com presents...

BASS BINGE
breaks + electro + drum & bass

Friday, October 21, 2005
starts @ midnight

21+, cheap drinks, great food, no dress code, no cover!!

every 3rd Friday @ The Bunkhouse
124 South 11th St. (just south of Fremont, near Maryland Pkwy)
In fabulous Downtown Las Vegas!!
Venue pics/map here: http://BunkhouseLV.com/AboutUs.html

View flyer here: http://BlankCanvasLV.com/bassbinge.html

Thanks to your support, Bass Binge, while only 3 months old, has established a strong foundation for a community for fun-loving people to come together to sweat to the sounds of quality, underground electronic dance music. In the coming months, we will be bringing you even more out-of-town guests (some that you probably haven't heard of, but really should... trust us :) Starting with the month of October, we will be presenting a 4-way drum & bass tag-team crew from Phoenix, next to one of your favorite local boys. We have also upgraded our soundsystem, and will be supporting related crews electronic music nights at the Bunkhouse on Friday nights (more info later) - mark your calendars, this one's going to be insane!!

ORGANIZED CONFUSION (Phoenix, AZ)
feat. DR. GONZO, ADMYER, FREQUENCY, & NICE GUY
4-way drum & bass tag-team madness!!

Organized Confusion is an Arizona-based production crew/DJ collective that has been throwing parties for over 2 years, picking up where the big dogs (Swell/ Desert Trance Society) left off with ground breaking events like Wonder, Menage et Trois, Wonder 2 and the upcoming Remembrance (Nov. 12, 2005), normally focusing on drum & bass, breakbeats, and hardcore. When not throwing parties, you will usually find the members of Organized Confusion dropping wax or in the studio working on new tracks. The DJs coming to rinse Vegas consist of DR. GONZO, ADMYER, FREQUENCY, and NICE GUY. These guys are guaranteed to drop the sounds to get you moving... come see what your Arizona neighbors have been brewing!!

PAUL G (United Breakbeat Kru, Las Vegas)

You know him, you love him... Paul G has made a name for himself as one of LV's most diverse and talented DJs, spinning house, breaks, and drum & bass at parties all over town, however his heart is closest to the funky breakbeat sound. You saw him tear it up in a 3-way tag-team set with his United Breakbeat Kru partners (Abiss & Buddah Lee) at the first Bass Binge this past July... now is Paul G's turn in the limelight, and your turn to get down!!

See you there!

--

Also at The Bunkhouse, Friday nights @ midnight:

2nd Fridays: S.B. presents: (((Techno-(o)-logy))) - Redefining the sound of the underground, w/resident DJ Jonny Vibe + guests.

Spaced Invaders THANKS and pictures

Just a note of heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone who came out
and supported SPACED INVADERS the other night. We were kind of worried
after taking a month off for Burningman that no one would come, we
were wrong. So thank you to all of you, thank you big time to the
artists, and thanks most of all to our volunteers who tirelessly
busted their asses putting this together and taking it out. Because
without those volunteers this would not be happening.
And as if that weren't enough, we sold more art!
THANK YOU.
Pictures are posted here
http://www.vegasartists.com/pictures/si10-05/index.html

See you all on November 5'th when we do it all over again, if not
sooner at Dark Skies in two weeks! BOOM.

And not just in Las Vegas, it appears there are no Dunkin Donuts in the entire state of Nevada. Does anyone know the reason for this? Dunkin Donuts is junk-food I admit, but I miss their coffee (esp. iced coffee!) and breakfast sandwiches on occassion.

If not, and if there's interest, I'd like to moderate one, open to all firedancers in the area.

Feedback? Ideas?

Hey all
Aside from the smoke inhalation and the construction, or the 4th traffic, there are some of you dealing with pens and paper, or computers and cartridges.
There will be a get together of women writers in Las Vegas, called The Las Vegas Quill Keepers. This group serves as a kitchen table for those in IWWG, or those in the NWWA. The first official unofficial get together will be 11am the 9th of July, at the Silverton Casino's 24 hour cafe, (just next do the silver trailer at the hootie bar). No dues, just responsible for your own brunch/lunch costs.

If you are interested, you can Private Message me, or email at cj@cathejones.com

Thanks!

Protest today! - NOW (National Org. for Women) & Planned Parenthood

Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Conner announced her retirement. She was often the swing vote on matters of a woman's right to choose and also rights of privacy. If the Bush administration nominates a far right wing judge to fill her vacant seat, and pushes him or her through the senate, we will see Roe Vs. Wade overturned. We will lose our right to choose.

Here is what we can do:

1. Call our Nevada senators.

Harry Reid: 877-894-7711
John Ensign (R): 877-894-7711

An assistant will answer the phone and record your comments when you call. Here is a script you can recite over the phone:

"As a constituent of yours and a supporter of women's rights, I am calling to speak about the current vacancy on the Supreme Court. Please tell the senator that we must be able to count on judges that will protect our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms. Please tell the senator to carefully scrutinize the record and position of any nominee to ensure that the Supreme Court upholds a woman's right to choose, as well as a woman's right to privacy."

2. Contact our senators via e-mail:
http://capwiz.com/now/mail/oneclick_compose/?alertid=7770896#message

3. Tell your friends to contact our senators

4. If you can, join us today at the federal court house to protest at 4 p.m. The courthouse is located at: 333 Las Vegas Blvd, South. We will have signs for you to carry.

It's going to get ugly but Sen. Reid has started talking about 3 moderate choices so when they come out with their right wing choices it will be obvious what they are doing.

You can read what Sen. Reid said about a potential retirement here - http://reid.senate.gov/record2.cfm?id=240063

Restaurants

A while ago I posted this list on the "Las Vegas" tribe. I've had to amend it - both Tre and Wild Sage have closed :(

***Classic Vegas***

1. The Golden Steer: This was the first steak house in Vegas. Sinatra ate there, as did Dino and Sammy, etc. The booths are named after stars that frequented. (Price: Expensive. It was $250 for two of us which included cocktails, wine and appetizers)

The Golden Steer is just West of the Strip on Sahara.

2. Hugo's Cellar: is located in the 4 Queens Downtown. It is noted for its French food and table-side service. I had an excellent meal there, and it seemed to be a popular place for couples (it has a romantic atmosphere). I'm not sure of the price since I was there on a business dinner, but I bet it was quite expensive.

3. Chicago Joe's: is located Downtown in an old house. It is ancient in 'Vegas time' - it has been around for approx. 30 years. The food is Sicilian-American style, good and very inexpensive. The atmosphere is quaint and fun. I was just there last weekend (August 28) and the Travel Channel was filming. Get there before all the tourists do!

***Ethnic***

Vegas has some really excellent ethnic restaurants – from Vietnamese to Mexican.

1. Pho So 1: is my favorite Vietnamese place. It's located on Spring Mountain Road. It ’s very inexpensive, but very, very good (I ’m hooked on half their menu). I take guests there all the time and as a treat I order the hibacci (sp?) grill.

2. The best Thai on the West Coast is at Lotus of Siam. The chef moved her award-winning kitchen from L.A. to Vegas and, man, do we love her for it. The food is wonderful and inexpensive. Some people say the only downside is that it’s located in the Commercial Center (just a few blocks east of the Strip on Sahara). The Commercial Center is famous for it’s swinger’s clubs. I ’m not interested in those, so I don’t pay much attention.

3. For Mexican, we go to Lindo’s on Decatur. The Mole is divine and very light on the pocket book. Warning: don’t fill up on the chips before the meal, but DEFINITELY order the guacamole.

There are many more good restaurants in this category, but I’ve listed my favorites …If anyone has a specific ethnic genre you want to know about, just ask. I’ve eaten everywhere!

***New-wave American***

The restaurants in this category have been started by Chefs who worked on the strip and then branched out to neighborhood gourmet kitchens. The atmosphere is always very romantic and sheik, and the food is of the highest quality.

1 and 2. Rosemary's and the Jazzed Café and Vinotecca are on West Sahara. While the Jazzed Café is known for it's exquisite wine list, both are known for their excellent fusion cuisine. They are also in pretty much the same price category –moderately expensive.

***Vegetarian***

1. When I was a vegetarian (circa 1990 –2001), one of the first places I ventured to was the Rainbow Café on East Sahara. It has good, adventurous food at very low prices. The café and store are under new management and have somewhat odd hours, so I would call and make sure of their times. Their number can be found in the Yellow pages online.

2. Inside the commercial center there is a Thai restaurant called Komol which has a vegetarian menu. I eat there quite often. The food is excellent and inexpensive.

3. Lastly, there is a Raw Foods restaurant called, funny enough, "The Raw Truth." They recently moved from East Flamingo to Henderson. I went there once, and didn’t appreciate the whole Raw Foods aesthetic at all. (Blech). I understand, however, that it’s a tasty place if you are into raw foods.

This is by no means a comprehensive list, but it gives you an idea of the places of quality off strip in Las Vegas.
